We’re less than a week away before SEC football officially kicks off and we have 2 great matchups from the schools in the state of Alabama to kick us off. Both teams are coming off disappointing seasons that saw Alabama finish with their most losses in 1 year since before Nick Saban arrived, and Auburn fail to win 7 games since 2019. Needless to say, it is a huge year for both these teams to get back on track but both these teams have great opportunities to build momentum for the year in week 1.

To get us started, we will focus on the Alabama vs Florida State game. The Crimson Tide will travel to Tallahassee to face the Seminoles who are coming off a disappointing season that saw the program finish with a 2-10 record. This will not be the same Florida State though that the country saw last year as the program brought in over 45 new players with 1 of them making a lot of noise this offseason in Thomas Castellanos, a QB transfer from Boston College. Castellanos has not lacked confidence this offseason made it obvious by saying that Nick Saban isn’t here to save Alabama. I’m not sure how wise it is for Castellanos to be making this comment before the ball kicks off as Alabama is projected to have one of the best defenses in college football led by LT Overton, Deontae Lawson, and a hard-hitting safety in Brayson Hubbard. All the reports out of fall camp have noted how physical and aggressive the Alabama defense is. It would be wise for Castellanos to keep his head on a swivel in this game. On the offensive side the Crimson Tide will have a new man under center in former 5-star recruit Ty Simpson. Simpson is an oddity in today’s game having never entered the transfer portal even though he is going into his 4th year at Alabama. Simpson features great athleticism with an above average arm but do not expect him to be nearly as fast as the previous Alabama QB. Simpson will have no shortage of player makers to get to the ball to in Ryan Williams, Isaiah Horton, Germie Bernand, and others. The Tide will be without their starting back in Jam Miller who is out with a collarbone injury but expected to return before SEC play.

One interesting aspect of this matchup is the coaching battle but not necessarily the head coaches in the game. Only 1 coordinator between these 2 teams is back in their previous position. FSU replaced both their coordinators and brought in Gus Malzahn from UCF and Tony White from Nebraska. While Alabama does bring back both coordinators only one is still in his role. Kane Wommack returns for his 2nd year as the Alabama DC while the offense will have a new play caller in Ryan Grubb who reunites with Deboer after spending last year with the Seattle Seahawks. Previous Alabama OC, Nick Sheridan, is still on the Tide staff serving as the QB coach.

Moving on to the other SEC program in the state, we shift focus to the Auburn Tigers, who kick off the new year with tremendous pressure on head coach Hugh Freeze. On offense, Auburn will debut transfer QB Jackson Arnold under center. The word I'd use to describe Arnold is “scrappy.” Don’t let that sell him short — he’s a former five-star recruit who, in his final year at Oklahoma, showcased the kind of toughness and versatility that caught Freeze’s eye. Arnold will have a couple of lethal weapons at his disposal in Auburn’s wide receiver corps — Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton Jr., whose elite speed can turn any catch into a house call, and rising sophomore Cam Coleman who had eight touchdowns as a true freshman. The offensive line also looks to be Auburn’s strongest in years, featuring new starters Mason Murphy and Xavier Chaplin, the latter projected as a first-round NFL draft pick. Still, Freeze has emphasized that pass protection remains a work in progress

Another unique facet of Auburn’s offense this season is its three-headed play-calling structure. Derrick Nix (offensive coordinator and running backs coach) handles first-down calls, Kent Austin (quarterbacks coach) leads third-down planning, and Freeze reserves the ultimate authority to override either of them. This collaborative framework was designed to leverage the strengths of each coach while giving Freeze oversight over critical decisions.

The defensive side has produced tremendous buzz in fall camp led by defensive coordinator, DJ Durkin. This Auburn defensive line has the chance to be one of the best units on the team led by future first round pick Keldric Faulk. A strong defensive line will open up opportunities for star linebacker Demarcus Riddick who is looking to build off a strong freshman season. This Auburn defense might need to be at their best to start the year as it could take time for Arnold and the offense to come around as Arnold looks to gain a complete grasp on the Auburn offense.

The tigers will be traveling to Waco, Texas and opening up their season on Friday, August 29th against the Baylor Bears who go into their 6th season under head coach, Dave Aranda. Aranda is known for being a brilliant defensive mind in the game even if past years have not been evident of it. Baylor will be returning their dynamic quarterback, Sawyer Robertson. Robertson is coming off a 3K yard passing season that saw him throw 28 touchdowns to 8 interceptions and ran for over 200 yards. Baylor will be without running back for the year, Dawson Pendergrass, who ran for over 670 yards last year while racking up 6 touchdowns.

Stay tuned for later in the week when I will release my predictions for these 2 games. It is crazy to say but it is officially game week for college football fans across the country!
